Week Six

Genius Hour Project: Basketball for a Cause

  • This week we decided that we are going to answer our two most frequently asked questions and they are: Who or what has inspired us for this project and how have our readings and resources have influenced us in this journey.

  • The first and most important thing that inspired us to do these basketball clinics for our project is that we both think that it is imperative to help people in other countries that cannot help themselves. That is why we planned to give all of the money that we raise to Robin's Nest Ministry (an orphanage in Jamaica). The second inspiration for our project was our love for the sport of basketball. We both feel that it would be an injustice to not use our ability to play basketball to teach other little girls who do not always get the same opportunities as boys when it comes to being taught sports.
  • In order to be qualified to host a basketball camp here at FRA, we have had to do a lot of research on how to be qualified in the health and business fields. We have learned that in order to get this kind of project done it takes a lot of back and forth with our mentors. This has taught us both a lot of patience and appreciation for what people do everyday for their jobs. This has made us much more determined to put on the best camps that we possibly can.

Week 5

Genius Hour Project: Basketball for a Cause

  • This week has been a very busy week for our project! This past Thursday we finally had our meeting with Dr. West (the dean of the lower school) about our basketball clinic! To put a long story short, he said that he thought our camp was a great idea for the community. While this is great news, we also got some advice that is going to set us back about a week on the clinic dates. This news was that on the 19th of February(which was going to be our first clinic) is a long weekend and many families are going to be out of town. Moving the camp back to the 5th and 12th of March is going to give us even more time to prepare and also not be conflicting with the school schedule.

  • Next Monday at one o'clock we also intend to have a meeting with Mr. Palmerton (the athletic director). The reason for this meeting is to get his approval for our camp since he knows all of the activities that will be going on in all of the gyms on campus. Once we have this meeting we will finally be able to go over to the lower school and start spreading the word about our exciting clinics!

  • We are so excited to be so close to the start of our clinics! See you all next week.  american, basket, basketball

    Week Four

Genius Hour Project: Basketball for a Cause

How will our project help us stand out to colleges and shape our life plan?

    • When typically applying to colleges, they look at many things such as: grades, teacher comments, and extra curricular activities. This project that we are doing to raise money for Robin's Nest Ministry in Jamaica is definitely something that will stand out on our resume. Having this project on our resumes is going to impress colleges because this will prove to them that we are very dedicated students. This project shows our dedication because of all the hard work we have put into it such as planning the clinics, setting up meetings, watching videos on how to coach young girls, and also raising money for someone besides ourselves. Raising money for Robin's Nest will also show colleges that we are the type of students who are going to contribute to the well being of their school and that we think about the needs of others before ourselves. While having good grades and being well liked by your teachers looks fantastic on a college resume, this project makes us stand out to colleges because this type of dedication is rarely shown by high school students.

    • While this project is going to allow us to stand out to colleges, this could as potentially help shape our lives. This could change our lives because of the education we could get from the schools that we go to. Without the help of this life changing experiment, we could potentially not get into some of the schools we would like to attend in the coming years. Even though right now we might not see the end goal, this project is definitely worth it in the long run!
