Week Twelve

Genius Hour Project Update: Basketball for a Cause

  • What We Accomplished This Week: This past week/weekend was a very exciting week for Basketball for a Cause. On Sunday we held our basketball clinic at the Franklin Road Academy Lower School gym. While our turnout was not incredible, we still put on the best camp we possibly could! The response we got was a very positive one and the excitement during the camp was amazing. We put together a lesson plan that was able to occupy our participants for the entire hour we held the camp on Sunday. We also ended up raising a total of $175 for Robin's Nest Ministry. This is great as this will be enough money to sponsor an orphan for almost 11 months.

  • What We Still Need To Do: Since we have already held our basketball clinic, there is not very much left to do for Basketball for a Cause. The only thing we have left to do (besides our TED talk after Spring Break) is to send the money that we earned off to Robin's Nest Ministry. Thank you so much for coming on this journey with us!

Week Eleven

Genius Hour Project Update: Basketball for a Cause
  • What We Accomplished This Week: This week was a very challenging week for Basketball for a Cause. As you all know we were supposed to have our first basketball camp last Sunday; unfortunately that did not happen. The girls that we had signed up were not able to attend on Sunday (March 5th) as they had already committed to other events and one of the girls were injured. However, we have word from all of the girls and they will be able to attend this Sunday (March 12th).

  • What We Still Need To Do: The main thing we still need to do for this project is collect the money we plan on donating to Robin's Nest Ministry. Since we did not have a camp last week, we do not have the money in our possession as we said we would in the last blog. We plan on donating around $175-$200 to the ministry. This will be enough to sponsor an orphan in Jamaica for nearly 10 months! We are so thankful that we have the platform we have to spread the word about this amazing ministry!

Week Ten

Genius Hour Project Update: Basketball for a Cause

  • What We Accomplished This Week: This past week was an extremely busy week for Basketball for a Cause. Our first clinic is this coming Sunday (March 5th), so we have had so many tasks to complete. On Tuesday, we sent out emails to the girls' parents making sure their children will still be able to attend. This was to ensure that we will have at least a couple of girls show up to the camp. The second thing we did was on Thursday when we sat down and created our lesson plans for the clinics. This was just to ensure that we would be well prepared for this Sunday.

  • What We Need To Do Next:  There is not very much left to do for Basketball for a Cause. We have a lesson plan for both clinics set up, snacks purchased, advertisement is finished, and we have access to the gym on the dates we need it. The main thing we need to complete is collecting the money that we are going to raise for Robin's Nest Ministry. Once we have all of the money together and safe, Millie is going to send it off to Robin's Nest!

Week Nine

Genius Hour Project Update: Basketball for a Cause

  • What We Did This Week: Although this past school week was only three days long, the Basketball for a Cause project had a very successful week. On Tuesday, Millie took our day off and used it as a work day. She made 70 flyers to put in all of the 2nd-4th grade girls' Take Home Tuesday Folders. This is great as we have already had three girls sign up out of the twelve slots we have open. Also on Friday, we went to the Lower School and hung up some of our flyers to spread the word even more. We put a bright blue flyer by the student sign out sheet that way when parents come to get their kids, they will see our camp flyer.

  • What We Plan To Do: This upcoming week is going to be a very important week for Basketball for a Cause. We still need to sit down and make lesson plans for our two basketball clinics. We need to figure out how to make the most of the hour and a half we have with the girls for each session. We do not want the girls to go home and tell their parents that the camp was boring. The next thing we need to complete by the end of next week is purchase snacks and waters for the camp. We plan to have a ten minute break within each camp so the girls can stay focused for as long as possible.

Week Eight

Genius Hour Project: Basketball for a Cause

  • What We Accomplished This Week: This week was an extremely successful week for Basketball for a Cause! As we have told you in recent blog posts, we finally were able to present our basketball clinics at a Lower School Chapel this past Friday! This was a very exciting day for our project as it means we are getting closer and closer to the start of our basketball clinics. This week we also communicated back and forth with Dr. West (dean of the lower school) about any advice he had for our clinics. The advice he gave us was to be extremely detailed about our clinics to the parents and to have fun while working with the girls!

  • What We Plan To Do: While we have accomplished a lot this week, we still have a lot to do in the coming weeks. We still need to complete our flyers to put in the girls' Take Home Tuesday Folders so they can tell their parents about the clinics. Another thing we also need to work on is the lesson plans for the two basketball clinics. Once we complete these two things, we can really focus on making this the best experience for the girls' as possible.
